Full activity programme including sports, the creative arts, trips and visits, talks, workshops, etc also takes place during weekends, to which Senior day students are most welcome.

Extra Curricular

Our co-curricular programme
supports our academic programme

Ackworth School has a strong boarding ethos, which means that a full academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular programme is offered daily. From morning to evening there is much on offer, whether students are day students or full boarders. The days are full with much to do and friends to interact with.

Students have a vast range of extra-curricular activities to choose from. A comprehensive sporting programme operates during curriculum time, after school and at the weekends. Major sports are on offer to our students including football, hockey, netball, tennis, rounders, swimming and athletics. Alongside these, many other sports are also available including basketball, badminton, table tennis, volleyball, squash, fitness training and fencing.

In addition pupils have many opportunities throughout their time at school to develop life long skills such as leadership and team work through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Sports Teams, Music, the Performing Arts, Debating, public speaking, PeaceJam and Student Councils to mention but a few.

Throughout the week the extra curricular programme, which takes place during lunch times and after school, offers over 50 activities, covering a diverse range of disciplines including dance, gymnastics, aerobics, silversmithing, drama, art, textiles, DT, IT, model railway club, cyber club, swing band, ensembles, choirs, orchestra, cookery, and many more.

We encourage students to get involved with extra-curricular drama, whatever the nature of their interest happens to be. Opportunities exist for people to work backstage or with the technical elements of theatre as well as performance. During the course of the school year there will be one major school production held at Christmas, often in conjunction with the Music Department.

During the Spring term, the inter House Drama Festival is held where each house produces a 20-30 minute piece of theatre. This could be an original piece or a published play. Towards the end of the Summer term, the younger students (1st 3rd year) perform sketches which they have produced as part of the drama club.

Every year there are new additions to the programme and as a private boarding school try and endeavour to match the needs of our students. Ackworth School has excellent facilities including many pitches, Swimming Pool, Sports Hall, Fitness Room, Gymnasium, tennis and netball courts, squash courts, and use of a nearby all weather pitch and golf course. The School is set in beautiful grounds providing space for students to unwind, socialise or simply to relax.

Being a private school, a full activity programme including sports, the creative arts, trips and visits, talks, workshops, etc also takes place during weekends, to which Senior day students are most welcome.

An Evening with John Godber

The evening was organised by Carol Raynor to raise funds for our theatre. John was interviewed about his life and career as a playwright and director and his views on contemporary theatre. Additionally, fourth form GCSE Drama students took part in a number of scenes from some of John’s most famous plays including Teechers, Shakers (written with his wife, Jane Thornton) and Lucky Sods. A large audience of parents and friends of the school attended and were able to ask John questions. Afterwards John complemented the students on their work and expressed how much he had enjoyed the evening.

Clubs & Societies

Ackworth offers pupils a fantastic opportunity to discover new talents and learn new skills. The School provides a very wide range of clubs and societies which operate sometimes at lunchtime but mostly after School.

We very much encourage active involvement in clubs and societies. There are over 50 different clubs and societies on offer at Ackworth each week.
