The Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition was mainly based around two variables. The walk itself was spread over four days and fulfilled our aim of identifying and describing glacial features in the Cairngorms. The route chosen by the team was a demanding one, starting at Tomintoul and taking us on a journey through a daunting landscape. Campsites were in wild, remote spots, water was taken from burns, and enough provisions for four days had to be carried. Going on the expedition was a fantastic experience and it tested my character on many occasions, with wet boots and miles still to walk. Each day brought more than its fair share of breathtaking views. It was only on the first night that the weather was rough, with winds blowing our tents almost flat at times. When we finally arrived at Spittal of Glenshee we felt a huge sense of achievement. As a group we decided it was a once in a lifetime experience - we would be mad to do it again! A big 'thank you' to Mr Hickenbottom for all his advice and good humour.
