Bonjour! Guten Tag! ¡Buenos diás! Buongiorno! At Ackworth we are delighted to be able to offer French, German and Spanish on the curriculum and Italian Club after School.
All of our First Year (Year 7) pupils study French and German. Spanish is introduced in the Second Year (Year 8) when many pupils choose to study all three languages and some continue with French and German. All three languages are available at GCSE and AS/A2. Many of our pupils choose to study two languages at GCSE and some opt for all three.
We follow the AQA GCSE Modern Languages courses and OCR AS and A2 courses. Ackworth pupils benefit from resident French, German and Spanish Assistants who help them to develop their language skills as well as increasing cultural awareness. The Assistants are especially useful for pupils preparing for GCSE and AS/A2 examinations but our younger pupils do have some contact with them, which helps them to realise that they can communicate with a native speaker from an early stage.
Pupils in the First and Second Years have the opportunity to take part in a study visit abroad which gives them an opportunity to practise and develop their language skills. This is always a popular visit as it brings their language alive for the pupils, as well as giving them lots of opportunity to sample the cuisine!
Italian Club for beginners takes place on a Thursday after School and there is also a European Cinema Club which is open to Fifth and Sixth Form pupils, showing a variety of films - all of which are subtitled, so everyone is welcome.
